Community Schools Coalition
The goal of the Community Schools Coalition is to facilitate communication and collaboration between districts, partners, and families in Wayne County and to share resources and best practices to maximize the impact of Community Schools on our communities and to improve student experiences and outcomes.
Defining Workgroup Objectives
1. All youth feel connected to their community.
Increase neighborhood attachment by 3% every two years, as measured by the EYS. The coalition will do this through community events, out-of-school time activities, youth involvement in community service and event planning, and partners including MOST, STEADY Work, Youth Voice Leaders, community centers and after school programs.
2. Youth demonstrate strong healthy decision-making skills.
Decrease impulsiveness by 2% every two years, as measured by the EYS. The coalition will do this by expanding evidence-based prevention and social emotional learning curriculum through Curriculum Council partners and training adults in strategies that support youth regulation (such as mental health first aid, success coaching and suicide prevention trainings).
3. Youth demonstrate a sense of control in their own life.
Increase self-efficacy by 2% every two years, as measured by the EYS. The coalition will do this through youth-led initiatives, Success Planning in at least eight school buildings, STEADY Work, job shadowing, and support for youth on alternative education paths.
4. Youth feel able to regulate their emotions.
Decrease social-emotional distress by 5% every two years, as measured by the EYS. The coalition will do this through mentoring programs (for both mentees and mentors) and evidence-based prevention and social emotional learning curriculum.
This workgroup is co-chaired by Diane Kellogg, Ed Rose, and Casey Steiner.
