Early Childhood Workgroup

The goal of the new Early Childhood Workgroup is to provide critical supports for early learners (ages 0 - 6) and their families in order to promote healthy living and Kindergarten preparedness.

Defining Workgroup Objectives

1. All children enter Kindergarten ready to learn.

By 2031, increase the percentage of children entering Kindergarten ready to learn by X%, as measured by a Kindergarten readiness questionnaire. The workgroup will do this through early childhood transition team planning with districts and partners, mentorship for early childcare educators, regular engagement with superintendents and CPSE chairs, professional development through the Childcare Council and Quality Stars, and continuing and expanding Play & Grow groups.

2. Children and families access needed early intervention and support services without unnecessary delays.

By 2031, the number of children per childcare slot in Wayne County will decrease from 5.3 to 4.0. The workgroup will do this by expanding interim supports through Play Circles, sharing waitlist and service capacity data with local, county and state leaders, joining advocacy efforts such as the Kids Can’t Wait Campaign, and strengthening the early childhood workforce pipeline with colleges, BOCES and training programs.
